The Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE), Hyderabad, successfully organized a National Seminar on “GST Reforms and Its Impact on Indian Economy” on March 30, 2026. The seminar brought together eminent policymakers, industry leaders, academicians, and professionals to deliberate on the evolving dynamics of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and its implications across sectors of the Indian economy.

The programme commenced with the Inaugural Session. Prof. S Sreenivasa Murthy, Director, IPE, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the significance of GST reforms in shaping India’s fiscal landscape. Prof. Ch Lakshmi Kumari, Dean (Research), IPE, provided an overview of the seminar, emphasizing the need for continuous dialogue between academia and industry on tax reforms.

The keynote address on “GST and its Impact on Indian Economy” was delivered by Shri S Thirumalai, Director, VST Industries Ltd., who shared valuable insights on GST’s transformative role in enhancing economic efficiency in various sectors. Shri A Devender Reddy, President, Hyderabad Management Association, delivered a special address focusing on GST’s implications for Indian industries. The inaugural session was further enriched by the Chief Guest, Shri N J Kumaresh, Principal Commissioner of Central GST, Hyderabad Commissionerate, who spoke on GST’s contribution to the Indian economy referring to various key aspects in public finance and public policy.

The seminar featured two insightful panel discussions. The first panel, on GST and the Services Sector, included distinguished experts such as Dr. N Srinivasa Rao, Chief Economist at Bajaj Finserv Ltd., and Prof. R Srinivasan from the University of Madras. The session was moderated by Prof. A. Pawan Kumar, IPE. The session covered several key topics, including the role of GST in the services sector and its contribution to GDP; proposed reforms to be undertaken in the next GST Council meeting to foster growth and provide an impetus to the growth in the service sector; the impact of GST 2.0 rate rationalization on the services sector; the effect of changes in the 5% GST slab on demand for financial services and insurance penetration; the impact of GST 2.0 reforms on state revenues; and the effect of GST 2.0 on the unorganized sector.

The second panel discussion focused on GST and Manufacturing, Agriculture & Other Sectors, with contributions from CA Mohd. Irshad Ahmad, Chair of the GST and Customs Committee (TFTCCI), and Shri Sriram DS from Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Prof. Y Ramakrishna, Programme Head (PGDM), IPE, moderated the session. Shri Irshad highlighted the contemporary and future scope of GST in India. Shri Sriram said that the GST collection is increasing in the country year after year. Furthermore, farmers and smaller business owners still need to understand the importance of GST. Currently they are finding challenges in facing GST compliances.

The seminar concluded with a Valedictory Session, where CA M. R. Vikram, M Anandam & Co. Chartered Accountants delivered the Chief Guest address, sharing practical insights on GST compliance and financial governance.
